Beginner's Guide to Shorebirds
A Field School course for Adults
Offered by Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
July 26-28, 2011
About the Course: Nail down the identification of "peeps," plovers, and
other species in this introductory three-day field course. Throngs of
migrating shorebirds stop to feed and rest on the productive mud flats
and marshes and late July is the peak of activity. The identification of
sandpipers, dowitchers, yellowlegs, godwits, plovers, and other species
will be the focus, but along the way we will learn about shorebird
migration, behavior, and breeding biology. We'll also take a peek at the
tern species! A tour of South Beach in Chatham, Coast Guard Beach in
Eastham, and Nauset Marsh in Orleans; and dinner on the first evening
are included.
About the Instructor: David Clapp is an ornithologist and general
naturalist with training in biology and science education. He has a
strong interest in habitat conservation as well as land preservation and
management. The former director of Mass Audubon's South Shore
Sanctuaries, David now serves as a consultant on a wide variety of
research projects and continues to lead trips for Mass Audubon (and the
Smithsonian) throughout North America, the tropics of Central and South
America, East and Southern Africa, and the Indian subcontinent.
Additional Details: This Field School course is sponsored by Mass
Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, a 1,100-acre sanctuary
located in South Wellfleet, MA. Cost for the course is $275 for members
of Mass Audubon and $300 for non-members, which includes instruction,
field trips, and one group dinner. Participants may need to provide
their own transportation to and from study sites.
