Hello phytoplankton aficionados,
Central Puget Sound waters near Bainbridge Island are reported by Scott
Sanford of AGS to be very clear in transparency, low dissolved oxygen.
Until recently there had been a lot of diatoms including Rhizosolenia.
Today it may have been a bit of a transition to flagellates, although there
are, and have been, some Chaetoceros convolutus and Chaetoceros Phaeoceros
(e.g., Ch. socialis, etc) present. Recently some Alexandrium catenella
showing up (the harbinger of Heterosigma blooms in recent years, but so far
not a bloom of either). There was one solitary Heterosigma seen in the
samples. More remote location sampling will commence later today or
tomorrow.
Port Angeles Harbor waters had a collection of species reported by Randy
Hodgin including some Ch. convolutus with counts of 3000 to 6000 cells per
liter yesterday from 1 to 15 meters, and about 1000 to 4000 cells per liter
today.
An aerial survey may occur tomorrow, and with this timing, the very warm
weather and modest tides it does seem like the risk of Heterosigma are
increasing.
Best regards,
Jack

Hello all,
I hope you are all enjoying the sunshine! Our Ecology and Oceanography of
Heterosigma akashiwo project personnel have just finished setting up
operations at the Friday Harbor Labs on San Juan Island and now we are on
the lookout for phytoplankton blooms!
If you see any blooms in your area please send:
1. description of location (lat/long is ideal)
2. date and time of observation
3. any knowledge of cell type, water color or other physical observations.
Our goal is to sample a live Heterosigma bloom, but we are also interested
in sampling "aged" water in the location of any bloom. Many thanks for your
help, Vera
