As anticipated, a Heterosigma bloom is developing in North Puget Sound in
the eastern Bays and spreading out into the main body of the sound in areas
immediately north of Cypress Island-Guemes Island and to the east. Aerial
observations and ground truthing were conducted 28 July 2009 and sampling
will continue.
Extremely warm temperatures, vertical stratification from river runoff, mild
winds and neap tides are combining to exacerbate the situation. I
recommend that others increase their vigilance and please share your
observations or comments with the rest of us.
