Water samples were collected yesterday afternoon by American Gold Seafoods. Counts at Shannon Point Marine Center indicate 2000 to 4500 Heterosigma cells/ml near the Cone Islands (East of Cypress Island).
We also think there are Pseudochattonella-like cells in some of the samples. They are not very numerous and we aren't positive that's what they are, but FYI just in case...

Subject: SoundHAB: Heterosigma Bloom
As anticipated, a Heterosigma bloom is developing in North Puget Sound in the eastern Bays and spreading out into the main body of the sound in areas immediately north of Cypress Island-Guemes Island and to the east. Aerial observations and ground truthing were conducted 28 July 2009 and sampling will continue.
Extremely warm temperatures, vertical stratification from river runoff, mild winds and neap tides are combining to exacerbate the situation. I recommend that others increase their vigilance and please share your observations or comments with the rest of us.
