Seasonal Island Rangers



Part-time, seasonal position, May through August

Hours: Friday through Monday, 32 hours/week



Barnstable Clean Water Coalition (BCWC) is a non-profit organization working to restore and preserve clean water in Barnstable. BCWC co-owns and co-manages Dead Neck Sampson's Island (DNSI) with MA Audubon. DNSI is a 1.4-mile barrier beach island that is utilized for nesting by multiple species of protected shorebirds.



Duties Include:

  *   Patrol Dead Neck Sampson's Island on foot and via boat to promote compliance with island rules and regulations regarding protected shorebird species
  *   Enforce island regulations and rules to protect listed shorebird species
  *   Educate visitors regarding island rules and regulations
  *   Educate visitors on coastal waterbird conservation and management measures used on the island to protect nesting birds and chicks
  *   Record and report daily visitor activity on island
  *   Assist with installation and maintenance of island signage as needed
  *   Carry out other tasks as needed and assigned by Field Operations Manager



Qualifications:

  *   Must be 18 years or older. Preference given to applicants who have or are working towards an associate's or bachelor's degree and/or have equivalent experience in environmental/marine/natural sciences, or natural resources management
  *   Experience operating small boats preferred
  *   Competent swimmer
  *   Experience communicating and interacting with public
  *   Comfortable working long hours in all field conditions, including on the water and variable terrain, in full sun and adverse weather conditions
  *   Ability to lift and carry items up to 40 pounds
  *   Must provide own housing and transportation
