Aquaculture & Water Quality Interns



Part-time, seasonal: June through August

Hours: Flexible, including weekends, 20-30 hours/week



Barnstable Clean Water Coalition (BCWC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission to restore and preserve clean water throughout Barnstable. The majority of BCWC's focus is on alternative nutrient reduction strategies. BCWC utilizes four core components to accomplish its mission: educate, monitor, mitigate, and advocate.



Interns are primarily responsible for BCWC's demonstration upweller tank for growing oysters. In addition, interns are involved with water quality sampling and marine invasive species monitoring programs in the Three Bays estuary and at multiple sites in the town of Barnstable.



Duties include, but are not limited to:

  *   Care for oysters at off-site upweller tank on Hyannis Harbor
  *   Sort and track growth of oysters from 2mm to 25mm
  *   Clean and maintain upweller and associated equipment
  *   Collect and analyze water samples and associated data from upweller and harbor
  *   Enter data on oyster growth and water quality in database
  *   Provide public with information on oysters, water quality and BCWC

  *   Assist with other water sampling programs and marine invasive species monitoring

  *   Assist BCWC staff with other duties as needed.



Weekly stipend offered. Interns must provide own housing and transportation.



Qualifications:

  *   Internship is open to students, 18 years or older, currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a college or university with a major/degree in marine, environmental or natural sciences or related discipline
  *   Knowledge of shellfish aquaculture and water quality monitoring preferred
  *   Ability to work independently and with a team
  *   Comfortable communicating and interacting with public
  *   Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds
  *   Comfortable working in field conditions, including full sun and on the water
