This program is free and open to the public!
Want to learn more about the Ocean Sunfish? This is the most unusual-looking fish that come to feed in our New England waters. Although they are classified as the heaviest bony fish in the world, we know very little about their biology and ecology.
One thing we do know is that each fall and early winter, a number of healthy ocean sunfish strand along the shores of New England. Come learn about these strandings and how you can become a member of Team Mola, a community group that works together to rescue and research this beautiful species.
This information and training workshop will be offered at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary at 1 pm on Sunday, Sept. 22nd.
Meet Krill Carson, Marine Biologist and Founder of the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance (NECWA). Learn how NECWA, in collaboration with Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, is trying to make a difference by responding to ocean sunfish strandings along the shores of New England. You can assist at the level you are most comfortable with.
Be an "Investigator" who goes down to the beach to verify the presence of a stranded sunfish. Take photos and collect position information that is sent back to NECWA.
Be an "Investigator" who photographs and tags dead ocean sunfish that have washed up on the beach.
Or be a "Field Assistant" who takes photographs and tags the carcass like the Investigator, but goes further by collecting body measurements, a limited number of tissue samples, and who determines the gender of the fish.
NECWA will provide all the training and equipment needed for anyone interested in becoming involved in this community project.
