Tomorrow (Saturday, October 20th ) from 1-3 PM at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in South Wellfleet, marine biologist Carol "Krill" Carson will hold a training session for anyone interested in joining a rescue team that responds to stranded ocean sunfish. Ocean sunfish (known scientifically as Mola mola) are typically seen well offshore. But each summer and fall, juvenile sunfish occasionally stray into in shallow waters and become stranded on a falling tide.
Volunteers are needed for several levels of response from locating reported strandings and recording basic physical information, to tagging dead fish and gathering biological information and tissue samples on the scene. The meeting will include a brief talk about molas, their biology, life history, and the most common stranding locations on the Cape. Prospective volunteers will learn about the details of each responder level and receive hands-on training. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. For more information, please call 508-349-2615.
