Science Historian to Speak on Russia at Marine Biological Laboratory Falmouth Forum, March 2
Woods Hole, MA - Emeritus Professor Loren R. Graham, considered the leading authority on contemporary science and technology in Russia, will share some of his most interesting memories, his relationship with intelligence agencies - American and Soviet - and his observations on the changes in Russia he has witnessed for over half a century at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) Falmouth Forum<http://www.mbl.edu/falmouth-forum>, Friday, March 2.  Graham's lecture, titled "Visiting Russia over Half a Century," will be held at 7:30 PM in the MBL's Lillie Auditorium, 7 MBL Street, Woods Hole.  The free series is presented by the MBL Associates<http://www.mbl.edu/associates> and offered as a cultural connection between the Marine Biological Laboratory and the Cape Cod community.  Free parking is available in any MBL lot.
Graham is Professor Emeritus of the History of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard and has regularly visited Russia and the USSR over more than 50 years. As an exchange student he studied at Moscow University, and has returned to Russia many times to do research or participate in joint Russian-American projects. His trips there number about 200, some as long as an academic year, others just a few days.
Graham received his Ph.D. in History from Columbia University, and a Doctor of Letters honoris causa from Purdue University. He specializes in the history and sociology of science, and is considered the leading authority on contemporary science and technology in Russia, outside that country. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the American Philosophical Society, and a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Natural Science.
Professor Graham has written numerous books (translated in over a dozen languages) and articles on the history of Russian Science. His Science and Philosophy in the Soviet Union was nominated for the National Book Award. In 1996 he received the George Sarton medal of the History of Science Society, and in 2000 the Follo Award of the Michigan Historical Society for his contributions to the state's history. In 2012 the Russian Academy of Sciences awarded him a medal for "contributions to the history of science."

Professor Graham's presentation is supported by the Herman T. Epstein Memorial Endowment.
The MBLWHOI Library will offer an open house of the Marine Biological Laboratory Rare Books Collection <http://www.mblwhoilibrary.org/collections/rare-books-and-mbl-archives>  prior to the lecture from 6:15 to 7:15 PM in the Grass Reference Room, Lillie Building 2nd floor, located at 7 MBL Street. Library staff will display books and artifacts including T.H. Morgan's Nobel Prize.
