BOTANICAL DRAWINGS BY DR. SHIRLEY G. CROSS ON EXHIBIT AT GREEN BRIAR

This exhibition currently on display at the Green Briar Nature Center
features some of the botanical drawings in the collection of the Thornton W.
Burgess Society by the late Dr. Shirley G. Cross. Dr. Cross was one of the
first women to earn a doctorate in Systematic Botany from Radcliffe College,
a rare academic accomplishment in 1939. She moved to Cape Cod in the 1940's
with her husband, Dr. Chester Cross, also a botanist. In addition to
assisting with the operation and management of the family's cranberry bogs,
she was active in the Sandwich Community as a Scout leader, educator and
master gardener. Dr. Cross knew Thornton Burgess and the Burgess Society's
founder, Nancy Titcomb. Because of her background in botany and relentless
passion for the preservation of nature, she became active in the work of the
Society serving this institution as a volunteer, Board member and, for a
time, Board President.

Her most important contribution to the Burgess Society was the founding of
what is now the Shirley G. Cross Wildflower Garden at the Green Briar Nature
Center. She began creating this unique botanical treasure in 1979, the same
year the Society acquired the Green Briar property. Here she provided
lectures and garden walks and also worked in humble anonymity planting and
weeding in "her garden" until shortly before her death in 2008. Today the
Wildflower Garden continues as a tribute to her love of nature providing a
source of beauty, pleasure and respite for thousands of annual visitors.
This exhibit may be viewed Monday -Saturday from 10am to 4pm and Sundays
from Noon to 4pm through November. Green Briar is located at 6 Discovery
Hill Road, just off Route 6A in East Sandwich. 508-888-6870
