lang=EN style='font-size:11.0pt;line-height:150%'>This exhibition currently on
display at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Green</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Briar</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Nature</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Center</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> features some of
the botanical drawings in the collection of the Thornton W. Burgess Society by
the late Dr. Shirley G. Cross. Dr. Cross was one of the first women to earn a
doctorate in Systematic Botany from <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Radcliffe</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">College</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>, a rare academic
accomplishment in 1939. She moved to <st1:place w:st="on">Cape Cod</st1:place>
in the 1940’s with her husband, Dr. Chester Cross, also a botanist. In
addition to assisting with the operation and management of the family’s
cranberry bogs, she was active in the Sandwich Community as a Scout leader,
educator and master gardener. Dr. Cross knew Thornton Burgess and the Burgess
Society’s founder, Nancy Titcomb. Because of her background in botany
and relentless passion for the preservation of nature, she became active in the
work of the Society serving this institution as a volunteer, Board member and,
for a time, Board President. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

150%'>Her most important contribution to the Burgess Society was the founding
of what is now the <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Shirley</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">G.</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Cross</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Wildflower</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Garden</st1:PlaceType>
at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Green</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Briar</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Nature</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Center</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>. She began
creating this unique botanical treasure in 1979, the same year the Society
acquired the Green Briar property. Here she provided lectures and garden walks
and also worked in humble anonymity planting and weeding in “her
garden” until shortly before her death in 2008. Today the <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Wildflower</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">Garden</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> continues as a tribute to her
love of nature providing a source of beauty, pleasure and respite for thousands
of annual visitors. This exhibit may be viewed Monday –Saturday from
10am to 4pm and Sundays from Noon to 4pm through November. Green Briar is
located at <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">6 Discovery Hill Road</st1:address></st1:Street>,
just off Route 6A in <st1:place w:st="on">East Sandwich</st1:place>.
