Project Oceanology's mission since 1972 has been to nurture enthusiasm for science and for our planet's marine environment from our waterfront facilities on Long Island Sound in Groton. As a year round, marine science and environmental education organization operated by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit association of boards of education, colleges and other educational institutions, Project O has pioneered a hands-on, inquiry oriented approach to science through programs meeting state education standards. Using our research vessels, skiffs, oceanographic equipment, and marine laboratories, Project O leads more than 25,000 students and adults annually as they learn about the ocean, estuaries, rivers and marine life through firsthand, on-the-water science-rich experiences in the surrounding waters of Long Island Sound, Fishers Island Sound and the Thames River.  

Director of Curriculum and Instruction

Project Oceanology seeks in a full time Director of Curriculum and Instruction an innovative, experienced and dedicated educator and instructional leader to guide our team in curriculum revision and delivery of marine science and environmental education programs for elementary through high school students, college students, summer camp participants, and the general public.  The Director of Curriculum and Instruction will build on Project Oceanology’s achievements to date by leading curriculum revision to meet new Next Generation Science Standards, facilitating expansion of its programs, integrating of Project O activities into the local school curricula, fostering marine research, implementing assessments to evaluate and monitor program success, and providing leadership in developing, supervising, and evaluating Project Oceanology’s staff of marine science educators.  The successful candidate will have the passion, energy, tenacity, and leadership skills necessary to implement strategic planning goals that will help define the evolution of Project Oceanology’s services to meet our 21st Century learners’ needs.

 <>The Director of Curriculum and Instruction will report to the Executive Director.  Applicants should have knowledge of marine science and broad interest in oceans, including coastal ecosystems, fisheries resources, human interactions and management issues.  Delivery of marine science programs aboard research vessels, on shoreline programs, in marine laboratories, and in classrooms will constitute a portion of the job assignment.  Considerable physical stamina is required to work aboard vessels and outdoors for long periods, including during inclement weather.  The position requires expertise in science pedagogy, sound judgment, independence, initiative, maturity, and excellent observation and communication skills.  Hours are flexible and varied, including some evenings and weekends.  Salary range is expected to be $55k-$80k, commensurate with experience and credentials.

Education, Experience and Training:

●      Minimum BA or BS degree required; advanced degree with coursework in biology, marine biology, or environmental science preferred.

●      Minimum ten years experience in formal or informal education at the elementary, secondary, or college level required.

●      Evidence of successful leadership and supervisory experience is required.

●      Knowledge of Next Generation Science Standards and Ocean Literacy Principles required.

●      Curriculum development experience required, with evidence of successful implementation of that curriculum.

●      Outdoor and/or marine science education program experience highly desirable.

●      Experience using oceanographic equipment in educational environment highly desirable.

●      Proficiency with Gmail/Google suite, MS Word, MS Excel required.

Certificates/Licenses:

●      First Aid/CPR certification required.

●      USCG OUPV license or higher; ability to obtain license if not currently licensed.
