Southeastern Massachusetts
Pine Barrens Alliance (SEMPBA) will host a free training in identifying and
monitoring rare plants by the New England Wild Flower Society (NEWFS), in
conjunction with the New England Plant Conservation Program (NEPCoP).  The NEWFS Plant Conservation Volunteer (PCV) seminar
usually occurs in Framingham; this seminar will occur in Carver, and focus on the
rare native plants of the southeastern Massachusetts Atlantic Coastal Pine
Barrens.

Plant Conservation Volunteer (PCV) Training
Saturday, April 5, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, in
Carver
Potluck lunch, beverages provided
Alternate training dates may be provided
for accepted applicants who are unavailable on April 5th.

Participants must apply and be accepted
into the program in order to attend the PCV training.  Read more about the PCV program, and download
the PCV brochure and application here: http://www.newenglandwild.org/conserve/collaborations/pcvs
Applications should be sent to John
Burns of NEWF by email or mail (below).  Feel free to contact him should you have any questions about the
training.  Applicants who are selected will
be sent additional information.

Additional information about the program:
After participants become trained PCVs, New
England Wild Flower staff call landowners to get permission to send the PCVs to
the area.  NEWF staff send previous
years’ field forms, maps, and directions to each PCV through a website.
Generally in groups of two or three, the PCVs then coordinate on their own a
time to meet and go out to find the population. After accurate identification,
they count up the plants, take photos and perhaps GPS points and write up notes
about the status of the population. One member then fills out a field form and
map and sends all the information back to The Society, where NEWF processes it
and sends the original materials to the State.  The time commitment and number of surveys is entirely determined by the
PCV. Once a PCV, you can connect with PCVs in other states on surveys as well.
All trained PCV’s are eligible for special
classes, field trips, and symposia.
