Dreaming of Sun and Blue Skies? Preview a Fun Summer Volunteer Opportunity at the Beach Ambassadors’ Open House
Beach bingo, nature’s treasure chest and osprey activities will be some of the attractions at the Beach Ambassadors’ Open House on Saturday, February 22 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Plymouth Main Library, 132 South Street. Join last year’s volunteers to find out if it’s the summer “job” for you. Qualifications include: a love of the beach and its wildlife and plants, a desire to share nature with others, and an ability to thrive in summer sun and sand.
We also welcome families to come and preview the fun nature activities that will be offered on Plymouth Long Beach this summer. Beach Ambassadors will run an osprey viewing station where people can look through a spotting scope at an actual nest and see the parents care for their chicks, play a quiz game called “osprey vs. red-tailed hawk,” and add their behavioral observations to the osprey journal.
Beach Ambassadors will also lead nature games and activities for kids on the main beach. Last summer, beach scavenger hunt, hermit crab races and story time were very popular to name a few. Lastly the volunteers will guide nature walks from day parking or the crossover to teach visitors about shells, sand formations, beach plants like dunegrass and camouflaged beach-nesting birds.
The Beach Ambassadors program demonstrates how people and wildlife can share the beach. We help beach visitors discover and enjoy wildlife, plants, shells, sand and more in ways that allow all to thrive.
Potential Beach Ambassadors should be in good physical condition and be able to walk at least a half a mile in sand. They should be able to withstand the sun, heat and wind of the beach. Experience teaching, leading nature walks, and/or bird watching is useful, but not a requirement. Those interested in applying should fill out an application. If accepted, volunteers will attend a training consisting of six classroom sessions and four field trips to gain a broad understanding of the coastal habitat, its plants and animals and barrier beach ecology and ways of guiding others in nature discovery.
