Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation celebrates historic preservation this May.

It's Preservation Month in the parks! Did you know that the cultural resources in the Commonwealth's state parks represent over 12,000 years of human ingenuity adapting the land for habitation, industry, agriculture and recreation? The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) protects this legacy through innovative preservation programs and initiatives within its 450,000 acre park system. You are invited you to celebrate Preservation Month at a DCR program this May.

This year's Preservation Month theme Hidden Treasures highlights the quirky, unique and lesser known history in DCR's parks. Visitors can climb the Norumbega Tower in search of the mythic Viking city, peek back stage at the Hatch Shell, or explore the ruins of the Eyrie House Hotel atop Mount Tom. We kick off the month with a 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Historic Curatorship Program, DCR's preservation partnership engine that has leveraged over $16 million of private investment in 20 historic properties across the state. Join us at the Baker Lofts, 1231 Adams Street, Dorchester, MA on May 1st at 11am to celebrate the program's success and to begin a month of preservation programs.

With 50 programs in over 30 parks, there is something for everyone during DCR's Preservation Month celebration. New this year is a Twitter Treasure Hunt. Simply follow @MassDCR on Twitter for weekly clues about historic properties. Retweet with your answer and be entered to win a 2014 MassParks pass.
