FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
An Evening of Radio Storytelling in Woods Hole
May 23, 2013, 7-10 PM, Redfield Hall
Atlantic Public Media will present a free public listening event to celebrate the creation of new audio work by the students from the fourth Transom Story Workshop. It will be held from 7 – 10 pm on Thursday, May 23rd at Redfield Hall, 57 Water Street, in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
The event is sponsored by Atlantic Public Media, the local non-profit organization that founded our public radio station, WCAI, and created the Peabody Award-winning public media website Transom.org, a showcase and workshop for new public media.
Transom Story Workshop lead instructor Rob Rosenthal says of the students, “It’s uncanny how they are consistently able to find interesting, surprising, and sometimes quirky stories on the Cape and nearby. Like the feature about the world's largest glass armonica or the whale that sings at an unusual frequency or the long lost sign language from Martha's Vineyard.... need I say more?”
Since early April, nine beginning radio students have been living in Woods Hole learning the craft of telling stories with sound. Of this session’s students, one is from England, and the rest hale from all over the United States, their ages ranging from early-twenties to late-thirties. Because the stories they’ve produced focus on our local area, we anticipate people they’ve profiled or talked with will be in the audience. A question and answer period will follow each piece.
The listening event will precede a brief graduation ceremony and the public is urged to join us in applauding this spring’s Transom Story Workshop graduating class.
“This evening of stories is always a huge pleasure,” says Executive Director Jay Allison. “The students come here from all over the country knowing virtually nothing about 1) our community, and 2) producing radio. At the end of two months, they've made these beautiful stories that tell us marvelous new things about the place we live. It's like sending random people into a mine and they come out with gems, perfectly cut.”
Jay Allison, long-time public radio producer and founder of WCAI, established Atlantic Public Media as a non-profit organization in 1993. APM created Transom.org, and produces The Moth Radio Hour (also a Peabody winner) and created the popular NPR series, This I Believe, as well as programming for WCAI, including the Sonic IDs, and The Local Food Report.
