WHRC Sustainability Science Speaker Series – Second Lecture Focuses on
Inland Fisheries

On Thursday, May 30th, the *Woods Hole Research Center* (WHRC) will present
the second lecture of its spring series on the current issues in
sustainability science. WHRC Associate Scientist David McGrath will speak
on the state of the world’s inland fisheries, fisheries co-management, and
the challenges of managing small-scale artisanal fisheries. Dr. McGrath’s
talk will focus on the characteristics of Amazon floodplain fisheries,
developing effective co-management systems for floodplain fisheries in the
Brazilian Amazon, the potentially conflictive relationship between policies
for aquaculture development and management of small scale fisheries in
developing countries such as Brazil, and the lack of support for the
conservation of inland fisheries, despite their importance for the
conservation of aquatic ecosystems and the livelihood of rural people
throughout the developing world.
The lecture will take place at 5:30 pm in the WHRC Harbourton Auditorium,
149 Woods Hole Road, Falmouth, MA. It is free and open to the public;
however, parking and seating are limited and reservations are strongly
encouraged. To reserve, email events at whrc.org or call 508-444-1517.
