Check out these great ways to volunteer!
Ospreys will be returning to the Cape in a few short months.
It is hard to believe that we are almost half way through January. In very little time, the daffodils will bloom and migrating song birds will return to their nesting sites on the Cape. With spring fast approaching, we want to let you know about some upcoming projects that you may want to take part in.
The great part of volunteering with HCT is that you fit us in when you have time. From high school students to grandparents, your volunteer commitment is designed to fit with your busy schedule.
Whether you are a seasoned volunteer or new to our annual Citizen Science programs, we welcome you once again for another great season! Thank you all for your help in making our volunteer programs such a great success!
Harwich Herring Counters
This year is the fifth for the Herring Count Project. Since its start, over 150 volunteers have helped us to collect valuable data needed by state and federal agencies to assess the health of river herring. The annual Herring Count takes place from April 1st through May 31st. Many volunteers are needed to fill the 60+ shifts we have throughout the week.
Please join us for an informational meeting February 13th at 4pm in the Harwich Community Center. Or contact Ryan Mann at (508) 432-3997 or email hctryan at cape.com.
An airborne alewife takes the last leap into Hinckley's Pond
In 2011, 25,000 fish were estimated to have entered Hinckley's Pond. In 2012 however, volunteers had a welcome surprise. According to data collected by the counters, more than 101,000 herring entered the pond. That represents a four-fold increase over 2011. While historic numbers were in the tens of millions, the 2012 increase is still nice to see. We cannot draw any conclusions from a one year increase, but we do hope the increase will continue. HCT is pleased to be collaborating again this year with the Association to Preserve Cape Cod as well as the Town of Harwich Natural Resources Department and the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fisherman's Association.
Please join us for an informational meeting February 13th at 4pm at the Harwich Community Center.

Garden Club Plans Clean-up
for this Saturday
The Harwich Garden Club is planning a litter clean up on Saturday, January 19th from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. There will be three gathering locations:
a.. The Community Center south parking lot
b.. The Weatherdeck on Route 28, West Harwich
c.. The East Harwich fire station on the corner of Routes 39 and 137
Please bring along a safety vest if you have one, gloves and some sort of self-standing receptacle such as a cardboard box or plastic bucket. If you have a cross country ski pole or stick with a nail on the end, either works well to pick up trash if you prefer not to pick up by hand.
This event will be canceled if there is snow.
Contact Gerie Schumann via e-mail by CLICKING HERE if you would like to help and at which location you wish to meet.
