Dear Friends,

So much is closed at this time on the Cape but thankfully, nature is always open and amazing events are happening, especially in the evenings!

Otter and Owl Outing

[Great Honed Owl by Mark Wilson]

Friday, February 1st from 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Join us for a presentation at the Mashpee Public Library and then head to Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary to search for these secretive creatures of wetland and woodland! Male and female Great Horned Owls are hooting to each other during their mid-winter mating season and seeking abandoned nests to take over. Otters are feeding and frolicking at Grassy Pond, leaving evidence of slides and scaly leftovers. Who knows what other winter wonders we may discover?

Meet at Mashpee Public Library

Dark Shadows: Discovering Wildlife of the Night

[CoyoteSniffBonesFeb2012gBest.JPG]

Saturday, February 2, 4:30 pm - 6 pm

Looking for nightlife on Cape Cod? The darkness is a stage for mink, weasels, fishers, coyotes and many other players. Their habits are amazing, and their vocalizations sometimes shocking. Discover the night with a presentation and walk and meet a creature that prefers dark to the spotlight - a possum rehabilitated at the Cape Wildlife Center.

Tree Identification in Winter

[Winter Walkers]

Saturday, February 9th, 10 am - 11:30 am

Unravel the mystery of recognizing trees without the clue of leaves. Winter is an ideal time to study bark, branching and bud patterns which help identify dormant trees. How are northern trees adapted to life in the cold? What are the advantages of deciduous vs. coniferous adaptations? Join Naturalists Ian Ives and Molly Cornell for a walk through Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary. You'll see trees in a whole new way!
