BEACH CLEANUP AT SCUSSET BEACH: HELP KEEP OUR BEACHES CLEAN!

October 23, 2010

For Immediate Release

For the past five years, the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance
(NECWA at www.necwa.org), in conjunction with Captain John Whale
Watching and Fishing Tours (www.captjohn.com) have scoured beaches,
river banks and marshes to pick up trash and record information about
marine debris and its impact on our shorelines. These beach cleanups
are part of a larger effort called COASTSWEEP
(www.coastsweep.umb.edu), the Commonwealth’s annual coastal cleanup
program, organized by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone
Management and the Urban Harbors Institute of the University of
Massachusetts Boston.

Last year, over 2,200 COASTSWEEP volunteers collected over 22,000
pounds of trash from beaches, marshes, rivers, ponds, and the seafloor.

This year, NECWA and Captain John Boats will be participating in a
COASTSWEEP cleanup at Scusset Beach located within the Scusset Beach
State Reservation. This beach cleanup date is scheduled for Saturday,
October 23, 2010 from 9 am – 11 am. Our rain date will be Sunday,
October 24, 2010 from 9 am until 11 am.

The public is invited to participate in this cleanup effort. Please
join us at Scussett Beach on the 24th of October and lets have fun
spending time walking the beach and making Scussett Beach free from
marine debris. NECWA and COASTSWEEP will provide all the necessary
supplies including protective gloves, garbage bags and data sheets
for this cleanup effort.
