Marion Natural History Museum Fall Programs

Afterschool Programs

Wednesday October 13, 2010 - Kayaking Through a Watershed : with Mark Whalen. We'll explore the history of Native American use of local rivers for trade. The concept of watersheds will be discussed, as the trip starts in one watershed going upriver to a region of interconnected ponds and lakes, then downriver through a different watershed. The impact of more recent human use of the land adjacent to the rivers (bridges, dams, bogs, farms) will be another topic. Finally, planning, preparation, and dealing with changes to a plan as the journey progresses will be discussed.
Wednesday, October 27, 2010 - Fish Frenzy - Join our experienced fisheries expert, Vinnie Malkoski, for a fishing adventure! We'll learn about the ecology and life history of several fish species found off our coastline. Each student will make his/her own fish-print t-shirt so please pack an extra shirt to paint.
Wednesday, November 3, 2010 - Sea Turtles - Did you know that four species of sea turtles are found around Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts in the summer? Come and learn about these endangered species, from the young Kemp's Ridleys, the size of a dinner plate, to the giant leatherbacks which can be 8 feet long and weigh more than 1000 lbs.
Wednesday, December 8, 2010 - Nature Crafts - We will work on projects for gift-giving using materials we find outside our front doors, (volunteers to help with crafts would be most welcome). Light refreshments will be served.

Cost of all Afterschool Programs is $4.00 for members, $6.00 for non-members.

Please contact the Museum Director at 508-748-2098 for more information.
