Invasive Species Control and Landscaping with Native Plants Workshop
Tomorrow 12:30 - 4:00 pm, Chatham

The Chatham Conservation Commission is hosting two speakers on Thursday,
March 18th from 12:30 - 4:00 pm at the Chatham Community Center. Todd
Mervosh, a weed scientist at the CT Agriculture Experiment Station will
identify local invasive species and present the latest information and
techniques on invasive plant control. Todd has conducted countless
research on mechanical and chemical methods of invasive species control.
Scott LaFleur, of the New England Wildflower Society will present
information on Cape Cod native plants that provide a beneficial habitat
for a diversity of wildlife, insects and birds. He will also discuss
the importance of incorporating natives into your landscape.

An increasing amount of research and study has been focused on the
negative impacts of exotic invasive species on our economy, local
ecology and biodiversity. Certain species have been identified as
harmful invasives based on non-native status, aggressive growth habit,
massive seed production, and/or ability to spread easily by root system,
lack of natural controls, and documented populations established in the
wild. Invasives out-compete native plants, and have contributed to the
decline of approximately 40% of US endangered and threatened species.

Learn how to effectively manage your property through appropriate
invasive species control methods and how the use of native species in
your landscape will reduce the need for watering & fertilizing while at
the same time contributing to the ecological diversity of Cape Cod.
This workshop is valuable to everyone, even if you don't enjoy
gardening.
