Commission is hosting two speakers on Thursday, March 18<sup>th</sup> from
12:30 – 4:00 pm at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceName w:st="on">Chatham</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType w:st="on">Community Center</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>. Todd
Mervosh, a weed scientist at the CT Agriculture Experiment Station will
identify local invasive species and present the latest information and
techniques on invasive plant control. Todd has conducted countless
research on mechanical and chemical methods of invasive species control. Scott
LaFleur, of the New England Wildflower Society will present information on <st1:place
w:st="on">Cape Cod</st1:place> native plants that provide a beneficial habitat
for a diversity of wildlife, insects and birds. He will also discuss the
importance of incorporating natives into your landscape. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

research and study has been focused on the negative impacts of exotic invasive
species on our economy, local ecology and biodiversity. Certain species
have been identified as harmful invasives based on non-native status,
aggressive growth habit, massive seed production, and/or ability to spread
easily by root system, lack of natural controls, and documented populations
established in the wild. Invasives out-compete native plants, and have
contributed to the decline of approximately 40% of US endangered and threatened
species. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
