The Woods Hole Research Center
Position Announcement
DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
The Woods Hole Research Center (Center) is widely acclaimed for leadership
in addressing the great, global environmental issues of our time through
science and policy. Based on a 10 acre campus near the village of Woods
Hole, Massachusetts, the Center has an annual operating budget of about $11
million and employs a staff of some 55 individuals, most scientists, whose
work is currently heavily focused on understanding and protecting the
world's forests and other ecosystems and in addressing key issues concerning
ecology and climate change. The Center's work includes major projects in
North and South America, Africa, and Asia.
The Center seeks an experienced, energetic, and creative Director of
Development (Director) to lead a sophisticated fundraising enterprise that
will ensure substantial philanthropic support for its mission and programs.
She or he will define and implement a clear communication strategy for
current and prospective donors; accelerate the commitment of funds from the
organization's most significant donors; and provide strategic and
motivational guidance to the staff and trustees.
This is a rare leadership opportunity for a dynamic and accomplished
individual. The Center is approaching its 25th Anniversary in 2010, and is
poised to develop and implement a campaign to significantly enhance its
assets.
The Director reports directly to the Center President, and is responsible
for all aspects of fundraising. She or he will be expected to personally
provide staff leadership for current and planned gifts from individuals and
for fundraising campaigns of the Center. She or he will supervise and work
as a team member with other development staff on all fundraising activities,
and will coordinate closely in this work with the Center's Director of
Communications.
Specific major responsibilities of the Director and her or his team include:
1. Managing the Annual Fund
2. Cultivating major donors and securing gifts from them
3. Conducting special fundraising appeals
4. Planning and staffing cultivation and fundraising events, including
dinners and receptions in the Woods Hole area as well as field experiences
5. Implementing a planned giving program
6. Identifying foundation grant opportunities and assisting with
proposals
7. Identifying corporate gift and sponsorship opportunities and
securing support
8. Planning and managing campaigns for endowment and capital
improvements
9. Serving as staff liaison for the Board Development Committee
The Center's development office currently includes two full-time and one
half-time positions: the Development Director, a Development Associate, and
an Administrative Assistant who supports both the development office and the
communications office of the Center. The Center expects that the Director,
once on board, will lead efforts to recruit a new, third full-time position.
The Center expects that the individual in this new position will play a
leading role in foundation and corporate support, and the Development
Associate will oversee events and the Annual Fund. However, the intimate
size of the group will require teamwork on all matters, and the Director
will manage staff for such teamwork as demands require.
The Director must have extensive experience in gift cultivation and
solicitation and campaign leadership, as well as strong managerial,
strategic planning, and motivational skills. She or he should also have a
strong collaborative orientation; experience with multi-faceted fundraising
efforts; and the personal energy, enthusiasm and drive to develop a program
that exceeds goals and overcomes obstacles.
The Director will be eligible for all Center benefits. The salary level is
flexible based on experience and education.
Application Instructions: To apply, send cover letter referencing Director
of Development, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three
