The Nature, Culture, & Harvest of Shellfish
A Cape Cod Field School course for Adults
Offered by Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
July 29-August 1, 2009

About the Course: Discover the fascinating historical uses, life
histories, and biology of shellfish as well as their culture and harvest
through a variety of field trips and workshops. Learn to identify
oysters, clams, and mussels, and gain an understanding of how these
marine invertebrates fit into coastal ecology. Assist with Wellfleet
Bay's oyster reef project and learn about aquaculture, harvesting
techniques, and the wild fishery.

Cruises into Cape Cod Bay and Nauset Marsh are included, as are special
shellfish tastings and a group dinner and lunch!

About the Instructor: Barbara Brennessel is a biologist who teaches at
Wheaton College in Norton, MA. She spends her summers in Wellfleet and
has developed a strong interest in the organisms that inhabit Cape Cod
ecosystems. She has written about diamondback terrapins (Diamonds in
the Marsh: A Natural History of the Diamondback Terrapin, 2006) and
Shellfish Aquaculture (Good Tidings: The History and Ecology of
Shellfish Farming in the Northeast, 2008). Barbara will be joined in the
field by Mass Audubon staff scientists, coastal resource specialists,
and local shellfishermen and aquaculturists.

We will also be joined by several guest instructors including: Sandy
Macfarlane, shellfish biologist, coastal resource manager, and author of
"Rowing Forward, Looking Back"; David B. Wright, historian and author of
"The Famous Beds of Wellfleet"; and Mass Audubon's coastal ecologist
Robert Buchsbaum.

Additional Details: Cost for the course is $295 for members of Mass
Audubon and $320 for non-members, which includes instruction, field
trips, cruises, and one group dinner and one group lunch. Participants
may need to provide their own transportation to and from study sites.
Housing is not available, but information on local accommodations can be
provided.
