<P DIR=LTR><SPAN LANG="en-us"><B><FONT FACE="Calibri">About the Course:</FONT></B></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-us"><FONT FACE="Calibri"> Discover the fascinating historical uses, life histories, and biology of shellfish as well as their culture and harvest through a variety of field trips and workshops. Learn to identify oysters, clams, and mussels, and gain an understanding of how these marine invertebrates fit into coastal ecology. Assist with Wellfleet Bay’s oyster reef project and learn about aquaculture, harvesting techniques, and the wild fishery. </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P DIR=LTR><SPAN LANG="en-us"><FONT FACE="Calibri">Cruises into Cape Cod Bay and Nauset Marsh are included, as are special shellfish tastings and a group dinner and lunch! </FONT></SPAN></P>

<P DIR=LTR><SPAN LANG="en-us"><B><FONT FACE="Calibri">About the Instructor:</FONT></B></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-us"><FONT FACE="Calibri"> </FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-us"> <FONT FACE="Calibri">Barbara Brennessel is a biologist who teaches at Wheaton College in Norton, MA. She spends her summers in Wellfleet and has developed a strong interest in the organisms that inhabit Cape Cod ecosystems. She has written about diamondback terrapins (</FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-us"><I><FONT FACE="Calibri">Diamonds in the Marsh: A Natural History of the Diamondback Terrapin</FONT></I></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-us"><FONT FACE="Calibri">, 2006) and Shellfish Aquaculture (</FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-us"><I><FONT FACE="Calibri">Good Tidings: The History and Ecology of Shellfish Farming in the Northeast</FONT></I></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-us"><FONT FACE="Calibri">, 2008). Barbara will be joined in the field by Mass Audubon staff scientists, coastal resource specialists, and local shellfishermen and aquaculturists.</FONT></SPAN><SPAN LANG="en-us"></SPAN></P>
