Coastal Ecology by Kayak
A Cape Cod Field School course for Adults
Offered by Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary
July 20-23, 2009
About the Course: Study the nature of salt marshes, coastal plain ponds,
barrier beaches, dunes, and tidal rivers by kayak. This course is
designed to take a unique approach to studying these coastal habitats
and the associated wildlife. The kayak provides a great way to explore
the more remote and private areas of Cape Cod that are inaccessible by
foot or larger boats. Great Island in Wellfleet, Nauset Marsh, and
Pleasant Bay, our paddling destinations, are some of the most scenic
waterways on the Cape. Our class starts on the first evening with a
group dinner and quiet paddle on a local pond at sunset!
Participants provide their own kayaks or rent boats for a small fee.
Basic paddling skills and the ability to swim are required.
About the Instructors: Dennis Murley has been a naturalist with the
Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary for 25 years, leading paddling trips
and other natural history programs. He attended UMASS Amherst,
concentrating in botany. He served as Chairman on the Eastham
Conservation Commission for many years. A native Cape Codder, Dennis
shares his natural history knowledge, familiarity with the Cape, and
infectious sense of humor on the field walks, canoe trips, and workshops
he leads.
David Weintraub is a full-time journalism instructor at the University
of South Carolina. Also a professional writer and photographer, he has
published eight travel guidebooks, including "Adventure Kayaking: Cape
Cod & Martha's Vineyard" and "Walking the Cape and Islands." David is a
long-time summer resident of Wellfleet and an avid kayaker and birder.
Additional Details: Cost for the course is $270 for members of Mass
Audubon and $295 for non-members, which includes instruction, field
trips, and one group dinner. Participants may need to provide their own
transportation to and from study sites. Housing is not available, but
information on local accommodations can be provided.
