EARTH DAY IN ORLEANS

*(PROVINCETOWN, CAPE COD, MA)* - The Provincetown Center for Coastal
Studies will host a special presentation celebrating Earth Day 2009, at Snow
Library in Orleans on April 22nd, at 6:30 p.m.

The presentation, *All Marine Environmental Issues are Local: Cape Cod
Coastal Waters in the Context of a Changing Global Sea* will feature two
guest speakers, PCCS Marine Policy Coordinator, Pat Hughes and Charles
“Stormy” Mayo, senior scientist and director of the Center’s Habitat Studies
Program.

Ms. Hughes and Dr. Mayo will discuss the issues of the changing environment
in the global ocean and the threats that large scale processes, often
human-caused, may have on the local marine environment. Focusing on the
great variety of marine resources along the coast of Massachusetts, the
presentation will include a review of the principal issues related to
fisheries resources and endangered marine mammals along with the influences
that changing human activities have upon critical components of the marine
ecosystem. The presenters will discuss the new ocean management plan being
developed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the latest information on
marine mammal activity and the results of studies being carried out by PCCS
monitoring the chemical and biological conditions of Cape Cod waters. This
talk will be heavily illustrated with graphic and photo slides.

The talk is free and open to the public. To learn more about this topic or
upcoming events, contact PCCS at 508-487-3622 Ext. 103.
