On Wednesday June 11 and June 18 and on Saturday June 21 and 28 from 10 am-2
pm the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster will present The
Amazing World of Plants with Sharon Ackland. Cost: $25/Member,
$30/Non-Member each class; $80/Member, $100/Non-Member for the complete
series. Bring a bag lunch and prepare for field walks after lunch on each
day.
Horticulturist and garden author, Sharon Ackland invites us to explore the
world of aromatic and healing plants. Sharon is an avid lecturer and
educator of the history of fragrant plants and their increasingly prominent
role in medicine, perfumery, and the garden landscape.
Class 1, June 11 (10 am-2 pm): The history and bounty of plant uses.
Discover when to pick and how to transform beach plum, highbush blueberry,
beaked hazelnut and wild raisin viburnum. Learn to prepare a botanical
infusion -medicinal, cosmetic, or culinary - from garden roses, spring
blooming redbuds, pitch pine, sumac or autumn olive.
Class 2, June 18 (10 am-2 pm): Compounding medicines from plants. Explore
remedies that really work for depression, anxiety, sleep disorder, colds and
coughs, ear infection, muscle aches, migraines and more. We'll examine
natives like bearberry, wintergreen, black cherry and staghorn sumac. Learn
how to prepare simple at-home treatments (capsule, tincture, ointment,
infused oil).
Class 3, June 21 (10 am-2 pm): Fragrance in your garden. Incorporate the
pleasures of aromatic plants into your landscape. We'll explore the full
spectrum of scented wilds and learn how to tap into the volatile oils and
active components of flowers, herbs, trees and shrubs and transform them
into revitalizing tonics and elixirs at home.
Class 4, June 28 (10 am-2 pm): Extracting perfume from plants. Create scents
from essential oils, carrier oils, alcohols, and extracts. Discover how to
utilize scent for aromatherapy or for energizing, relaxing or spiritual
centering. Compare environmental botanicals for diffuser, misters and
burners. Gather and prepare wild species for scent extraction - rosa rugosa,
eastern red cedar, reindeer moss, spicebush during our walk.
