Wastewater Education and Update Program to Be Held May 22 at Waquoit Bay
Reserve
On May 22, from 9 am to noon, Waquoit Bay Research Reserve will host a
program at their visitor center on route 28 entitled "From Your Backyard
to the Bay: What Every Cape Lover Needs to Know About Septic Systems and
Water Quality." The program will include presentations by local experts,
updates on specific projects, and take home information as well as
opportunities for discussion and question and answer with the speakers.
The workshop provides a crucial opportunity for citizens to obtain the
most up-to-date information as possible as voters on the Cape face the
challenge of this pressing issue.
Waquoit Bay Reserve staff will reveal how the Cape's geology is linked
to the problems with wastewater treatment. Maggie Geist, Director of
the Association to Protect Cape Cod, will explain how the nutrient
nitrogen, a major source of which is septic systems, affects the Cape's
coastal waters. Susan Rask, Barnstable County Dept of Health and the
Environment will provide an overview of wastewater treatment
technologies currently being considered by the towns as well as an
update on wastewater management progress in towns across the Cape as
well as coordination at the county level. Nate Weeks, a consultant
working with the towns of Falmouth and Mashpee will focus on progress
and possibilities for solutions in Falmouth and Mashpee specifically.
The Town of Falmouth's Wastewater Superintendent Gerald Potamis will
also be present to answer questions and join in the closing interactive
session with the audience.
