Wednesday June 11 and June 18 and on Saturday June 21 and 28 from 10 am-2 pm the
Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster will present The Amazing World of
Plants with Sharon Ackland. Cost: $25/Member, $30/Non-Member each class;
$80/Member, $100/Non-Member for the complete series. Bring a bag lunch and
prepare for field walks after lunch on each day.<BR> <BR>Horticulturist and
garden author, Sharon Ackland invites us to explore the world of aromatic and
healing plants. Sharon is an avid lecturer and educator of the history of
fragrant plants and their increasingly prominent role in medicine, perfumery,
and the garden landscape. <BR> <BR>Class 1, June 11 (10 am-2 pm): <I>The
history and bounty of plant uses</I>. Discover when to pick and how to transform
beach plum, highbush blueberry, beaked hazelnut and wild raisin viburnum. Learn
to prepare a botanical infusion -medicinal, cosmetic, or culinary - from garden
roses, spring blooming redbuds, pitch pine, sumac or autumn olive.<BR><BR>Class
2, June 18 (10 am-2 pm): Compounding medicines from plants. Explore remedies
that really work for depression, anxiety, sleep disorder, colds and coughs, ear
infection, muscle aches, migraines and more. We’ll examine natives like
bearberry, wintergreen, black cherry and staghorn sumac. Learn how to prepare
simple at-home treatments (capsule, tincture, ointment, infused
oil).<BR><BR>Class 3, June 21 (10 am-2 pm): <I>Fragrance in your garden</I>.
Incorporate the pleasures of aromatic plants into your landscape. We’ll explore
the full spectrum of scented wilds and learn how to tap into the volatile oils
and active components of flowers, herbs, trees and shrubs and transform them
into revitalizing tonics and elixirs at home.<BR><BR>Class 4, June 28 (10 am-2
pm): <I>Extracting perfume from plants</I>. Create scents from essential oils,
carrier oils, alcohols, and extracts. Discover how to utilize scent for
aromatherapy or for energizing, relaxing or spiritual centering. Compare
environmental botanicals for diffuser, misters and burners. Gather and prepare
wild species for scent extraction – rosa rugosa, eastern red cedar, reindeer
