Saturday, March 15th (10 am):  Free Presentation about Vernal Pools (Harwich
Community Center)

Join Ben Wright, HCT Assistant Director, as he talks about volunteer efforts
to certify vernal pools in Harwich. Also, learn more about The Big Night
Salamander Walk: The first rains above 40 degrees should bring hibernating
salamanders to vernal pools to mate. HCT will monitor conditions and let
interested walkers know when the time is right.

 

Friday, April 18th (7 - 10 pm) - $100/person, HCT's 6th Annual Spring
Winetasting Dinner at the Cape Sea Grille. 

To reserve, call HCT at 508-432-3997 or email: hct at cape.com.  Enjoy
delicious cuisine complemented by fine wines.  

 

Monday, September 22nd (8 am start) - HCT's 6th Annual Golf Tournament
Fundraiser at Cranberry Valley Golf Course - Reserve your foursome or

Walk and learn about changes in people, culture & landscape with Todd Kelley

Friday, April 4th (10 am): Early spring wildflower walk at HCT's  60-acre
Bank Street Bogs Conservation Lands

Botanist and journalist Rich Eldred will lead this interesting walk
searching for early spring wildflowers.

 

Saturday, April 12th (1 pm):  Mini-walk at Lee Baldwin Nature Trail 

Peggy Rose & Gail Hancock (Lee's sister) will lead a short walk through this
uplands/wetlands margin.

 

Saturday, April 19th (10 am): A Walk in the Hawksnest Woods with Commentary 
Join veteran walk leader, Irwin Schorr, to learn about the history,
folklore, geology & botany of the six ponds region.

 

Wednesday, April 23rd (10 am): Wading Place Path 

We'll follow a remnant of the original Monomoyick Native People's coastal
trail, with Mary J Metzger.

 

Saturday, April 26th (8 am): Bird Walk in the Bell's Neck Conservation Lands

Ruth Connaughton, of the Cape Cod Bird Club, leads us to watch for migrating
and nesting birds in a variety of habitats.

 

Saturday, May 3rd (3 pm): Spring Wildflowers at HCT's 60-acre Bank Street
Bogs Conservation Lands

Join botanist and journalist Rich Eldred to explore for spring wildflowers
at HCT's largest preserve. 

 

Tuesday, May 6th (9:30 am): More Walk, Less Talk at Coy's Brook Woodlands
with Farley Lewis of Orenda 

Co-sponsored by HCT & Orenda Wildlife Land Trust for a walk in the woods,
offering exercise and camaraderie.

 

Saturday, May 17th (2-4 pm): Non-Walk at the A. Janet Defulvio Wildlife
Sanctuary Boardwalk

Drop-in any time between 2-4 pm at this short, wheel-chair accessible
boardwalk trail to view an osprey nest and join naturalist, Todd Kelley, of
www.KelleyTrailblazer.com, as he interprets the salt marsh and surrounding
habitats.

 

Tuesday, May 19th (10 am): Explore HCT's  60-acre Bank Street Bogs
Conservation Lands

signs of spring.

 

Saturday, May 24th (1 pm): Open Trail Day at Cedar Spring Herb Farm, 159
Long Pond Drive, Harwich 
Walk the endangered medicinal plant trail with herbalist Donna Wood Eaton,
visit a vernal pool and cedar swamp.

Road  Map  for  HCT's  Spring  2008  FREE  Guided  Walks

  


A.  Meet at Town Hall to access the Island Pond Conservation Lands,
Directions: Park and meet behind Harwich Town Hall, 732 Main St., Harwich
Center.  We'll walk Bike path west. Dirt trail on right just past Island
Pond Cemetery.

 

B.  "Wading Place Path" Directions: From Rt. 137 & Rt. 39 intersection in
East Harwich, go east on Rt. 39. Turn Right on Pleasant Bay Rd.  Park on the
right at Eagles Nest Rd. cul-de-sac.

 

C.  Coy's Brook Woodlands, Directions: From Harwich Center, drive west on
Great Western Rd. to Lothrop Ave. Turn left on Lothrop Ave. Parking lot is
on the right just south of the water tower.

 

D.  Bell's Neck Conservation Lands, Directions: From Harwich Center, go west
on Great Western Rd. Turn left on Bell's Neck Rd. Park on side of road
between the East and West Reservoirs.

 

E.  A. Janet DeFulvio Wildlife Sanctuary Boardwalk, Directions: Off Route 28
in West Harwich. Enter lane between Small Gardens and G. Rockwood Clark.
Park in lot at the boardwalk entrance.

 

F.  Bank St. Bogs, Directions: Harwich Center, south on Bank St.Park at
Harbormaster's Workshop, on left #203 Bank St

 

G.  Thompson's Field, Directions: From Harwich Center, drive east on Rt. 39.
Thompson's Field parking lot is on right.

 

H.  Lee Baldwin Nature Walk Boardwalk, Directions: From Rt. 28, drive north
on Lothrop Ave. Boardwalk is on right.

 

I.  Hawksnest Conservation Area, Directions: Near the Route 6, Exit 11
intersection, follow Spruce Rd west.  Park on shoulder of Spruce Rd. near
intersection with Hawksnest Rd. (not marked).

 

J.  Cedar Spring Herb Farm, Directions: #159, south side of Long Pond Drive.
