Birding with Henry: January 3rd lecture focuses on bird encounters in
The Outermost House and kicks off a series of reflective talks on birds
of Cape Cod.

Birds feature prominently in Henry Beston's The Outermost House. This
classic book published in 1928 was written while Beston spent a year
alone in a cottage on Coast Guard Beach in Eastham. His meditations and
musings over the four seasons are filled with references to birds,
giving us a snapshot of avian life on the outer beach during the 1920s.
In a special lecture, Mass Audubon sanctuary director Bob Prescott will
discuss this famous author's observations and encounters with birds and
compare that with bird populations now.
The talk is scheduled for Saturday, January 3 at 1 p.m. It will be held
at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The fee is $3 for Mass Audubon
members and $5 for non-members. Refreshments provided. No
pre-registration is required, but helpful.
This talk "Birding with Henry" is the first in a series entitled "Birds
of Cape Cod: Past, Present, Future." With the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife
Sanctuary celebrating its 50th anniversary, this series of lectures
reflects on the nature of bird populations and conservation efforts in
the past and present with an eye towards future predictions and
concerns. Other talks in the series include:
February 5, 1 p.m.	The Long-Tailed Ducks of Nantucket by
Simon Perkins, Mass Audubon
March 21, 7 p.m.	Hawk Population Trends by Paul Roberts,
Eastern Mass. Hawk Watch
April 17, 7 p.m.	Massachusetts Ospreys by Alan Poole,
Cornell Lab of Ornithology
May 28, 7 p.m.	Changes in Cape Cod Birds by Wayne Petersen,
