Wastewater Workshop Series for Decision-Makers: Workshop # 3

Centralized Wastewater Treatment: Sewer Systems

September 11, 2008

Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

9:00 am - 12:30 pm (Optional Field Trip: 1:30 - 3:00 pm)

Target Audience: Municipal officials, planning and health boards,
conservation commissions, public works staff, wastewater and finance
committees, engineers and environmental groups

Description: Centralized wastewater treatment is likely to be one of the
primary means employed to deal with excess nitrogen loads from
wastewater sources on Cape Cod. In cases where large sewer systems are
deemed necessary to collect and transport wastewater to a treatment
facility, determining the type of system that is most appropriate for
each scenario will depend on a number of factors. This workshop will
bring up-to-date information on the different types of sewers available,
the advantages and disadvantages of each, and how to choose between the
various options. In addition, town representatives will present
strategies and lessons relevant to some of the typical challenges that
arise when communities are faced with making decisions about sewering.
