Ecological Landscaping and Gardening Workshop at the Waquoit Bay
Research Reserve
On Friday, April 25th, the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research
Reserve will be hosting the Cape Friendly Landscaping and Gardening
Workshop at the Visitor Center from 8:30am to 3:00pm. The course will
highlight ecological landscaping and organic gardening tips and
techniques for homeowners, garden club members and anyone interested in
the natural habitat. The new section on organic gardening has been added
this year to satisfy the well spring of interest in local food. The day
will feature a locally grown lunch from Coonemessett Farm.
Michael Talbot, President, Michael Talbot Associates will share his
expertise on safer ways to care for your trees, shrubs and flowers using
less irrigation and little or no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.
Michael has been developing, practicing, and teaching design,
landscaping, tree, shrub and lawn care methods for private and public
landscapes for nearly two decades--including work as staff
horticulturist and educator for the Massachusetts Horticultural Society
and Boston Urban Gardeners. An I.S.A. Certified Arborist, he is a
well-known author and lecturer, teaching professionals, homeowners and
garden clubs throughout the region. He has appeared on many radio and
television programs, including The Victory Garden and New England
Chronicle, sharing his expertise on ecological landscape care.
Lindsay Strode of Cape Organics will present an overview of ecological
lawn care, creating and caring for your soil and maintaining an organic
lawn. Lindsay has a long established business as a professional
landscaper on the Cape specializing in organic lawns.
Stan Ingram will teach participants about the process of growing their
own food-from soils and seeds, to working with the season's challenges
of weather, diseases and insects; right through to a healthy harvest.
Stan grew up working on truck farms in Southeast Massachusetts, was the
Garden Manager at New Alchemy Institute in the 1980s. Stan recently
returned from a few years growing his own food in Maine to start a
Community Supported Agriculture program at Coonemessett Farm in
Hatchville.
Joan Muller, Education Coordinator at the Waquoit Bay Reserve will
include an overview of the benefits of ecological landscaping, and
introduce participants to some of the local programs and resources
available as well as lead an optional walk around the Reserve estate
grounds to point out native plants readily available as well some
invasive species to avoid.
The Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is located at 149
Waquoit Highway/Route 28 in Waquoit. A donation of $15.00 to the
Citizens for the Protection of Waquoit Bay is asked which includes a
locally grown lunch from the Coonemessett Farm. To register please call
