Please join us for an exciting presentation on whales and acoustics at
Bridgewater State College.
Listening to Whales.
A presentation by Ingrid Biedron (Bioacoustics Research Program,
Cornell University)
Wednesday, March 28, 2007
4:00 – 5:00 PM
Moakley Auditorium (in the Moakley Center)
On the Bridgewater State College campus.
This event is free and open to the public.
Complimentary refreshments will be provided at 3:45 PM.
Ingrid Biedron, a doctoral candidate at Cornell University, will
present an overview of her work studying the acoustics (or sounds) of
endangered baleen whales that live and feed in the Gulf of Maine.
Learn how new technologies, like pop-up recorders and recording buoys
with cell-phone transmitters, are allowing scientists to listen in on
whale conversations hundreds of miles offshore. Large endangered
species such as the humpback whale, finback whale and North Atlantic
right whale, face many environmental threats including ship strikes,
entanglement in fishing gear, whale-watching and habitat degradation.
Ingrid will also describe her current research projects and other work
being accomplished by the Bioacoustics Research Program at Cornell
University.
This presentation is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Arts and
Sciences, BSC's Biology Club and the New England Coastal Wildlife
Alliance (NECWA).
Ingrid Biedron is currently a third year graduate student in the
Bioacoustics Research Program at Cornell University, studying the
acoustic behavior of North Atlantic Right Whales.
