On Thursday, August 9 at 7:30 pm at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural
History Dr. Priscilla Coit Murphy will speak on her new book, What a
Book Can Do: The Publication and Reception of Silent
Spring. $5/member, $7/non-member. A book-signing will follow the program.
In this presentation Dr. Murphy will analyze the importance of
the book form that brought Rachel Carson's warnings to a national
audience well beyond the original serialization in The New
Yorker. The roles played by the publisher Houghton Mifflin, the
media, the chemical industries and the perceptions and expectations
of the public are explored.
This classic study of one book's history and significance will
have great appeal for audiences interested in the history of print
culture and the influence of mass communications.
