<P>Book Can Do: The Publication and Reception of Silent </P>

<P>In this presentation Dr. Murphy will analyze the importance of </P>

<P>the book form that brought Rachel Carson's warnings to a national </P>

<P>audience well beyond the original serialization in The New </P>

<P>Yorker. The roles played by the publisher Houghton Mifflin, the </P>

<P>media, the chemical industries and the perceptions and expectations </P>

<P>of the public are explored.</P>

<P>This classic study of one book's history and significance will </P>

<P>have great appeal for audiences interested in the history of print </P>

<P>culture and the influence of mass communications.</P>
