FREE, Public Workshops about Conservation Restrictions
and New Federal Income Tax Incentives
Workshop description below is followed by workshop dates, times, locations, and directions:
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
The Compact of Cape Cod Conservation Trusts and local nonprofit land trusts invite landowners and the general public to this free workshop about powerful new federal income tax deduction incentives for conservation restrictions.
A conservation restriction limits development to protect natural resources. By implementing a conservation restriction, a landowner preserves his or her land while retaining ownership and traditional uses as well as realizing lower estate and property taxes.
Each conservation restriction is tailored to the resources to be protected on the property and what uses the property owner wants to continue. Examples of reserved rights can include maintenance of scenic views, trails and others. Public access is not required.
Recent changes to federal tax law, designed to encourage conservation, have increased the tax benefits for landowners who donate a conservation restriction in 2006 or 2007. The change in the law increases the amount of the deduction from 30% to 50% of adjusted gross income per year for 16 years, an extension of 10 years. Unless Congress extends the law, it will expire at the end of 2007.
