CORRECTION:
Yesterday's post to SEMCO listed the wrong date for the Shellfish of Cape
Cod field school course offered by Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife
Sanctuary. Below is the correct information, including a description of the
course. Sorry for any confusion. For more details of the course contact
Melissa Lowe at mlowe at massaudubon.org or at 508-349-2615. Thanks and have a
happy summer!
SHELLFISH OF CAPE COD
July 30-August 2, 2006
Learn about the unique life histories and biology of shellfish and their
harvest. Through field trips and workshops we learn to identify local
shellfish, including oysters, clams, and mussels, and gain an understanding
of how marine invertebrates fit into the ecology of the coast. Compare life
in different tidal zones and different habitats and learn about human uses
of shellfish including aquaculture techniques and the wild fishery.
Discussions will also cover how shellfish are affected by environmental
changes including harmful algae (red tide), natural diseases, man-made
contamination, and invasive species. Time is reserved for harvesting and a
Nauset Marsh cruise.
Bill Walton of WHOI Sea Grant and Cape Cod Cooperative Extension and Diane
Murphy of Cape Cod Cooperative Extension will be leading the course along
with Sandy MacFarlane and Beth Walton.
