Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, managed by the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is seeking applicants for
conservation and at-large representatives for its sanctuary advisory
council.

Applicants are chosen based upon their expertise and experience in
relation to the seat for which they are applying. Consideration includes
knowledge of the resources, and community and professional affiliations.
Terms run for two-years and members will serve without pay. The advisory
council meets on average four times a year depending on issues. Current
holders of seats may re-apply.

The Stellwagen Bank Sanctuary Advisory Council was established in March
2001 to provide advice on management and protection of the sanctuary.
The advisory council, through its members, also represents community
interests and concerns to sanctuary management and NOAA.

A council member application package may be obtained by calling council
coordinator Nathalie Ward, (781) 545-8026, or by e-mail at
nathalie.ward at noaa.gov. Advisory council member application packages are
also available on the sanctuary’s Web site, stellwagenbank.noaa.gov.

Completed applications should be mailed to:

175 Edward Foster Road
Scituate, MA 02066

Applications must be received by August 15, 2006. Representatives for
each seat selected by the sanctuary will begin their terms in October 2006.

The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary encompasses 842 square
miles of ocean, stretching between Cape Ann and Cape Cod. Renowned for
its scenic beauty and remarkable productivity, the sanctuary supports a
rich diversity of marine life including marine mammals, more than 30
species of seabirds, over 100 species of fishes, and hundreds of marine
invertebrates and plants.

The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council was
established to assure continued public participation in the management
of the sanctuary. Serving in a volunteer capacity, the advisory
council’s 21 voting members represent a variety of local user groups, as
well as the general public, plus seven local, state and federal
government jurisdictions. Since its establishment, the advisory council
has played a vital role in advising the sanctuary and NOAA on critical
issues and is currently focused on the sanctuary’s development of a
five-year management plan.

The NOAA National Marine Sanctuary Program, which manages the Stellwagen
Bank sanctuary, seeks to increase the public awareness of America’s
marine resources and maritime heritage by conducting scientific
research, monitoring, exploration and educational programs. Today, the
sanctuary program manages 13 national marine sanctuaries and one marine
national monument that together encompass more than 150,000 square miles
of America’s ocean and Great Lakes natural and cultural resources.

In 2007, NOAA, an agency of the U.S. Commerce Department, celebrates 200
years of science and service to the nation. From the establishment of
the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1807 by Thomas Jefferson to the
formation of the Weather Bureau and the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries
in the 1870s, much of America's scientific heritage is rooted in NOAA.

NOAA is dedicated to enhancing economic security and national safety
through the prediction and research of weather and climate-related
events and information service delivery for transportation, and by
providing environmental stewardship of the nation's coastal and marine
resources. Through the emerging Global Earth Observation System of
Systems (GEOSS), NOAA is working with its federal partners and more than
60 countries to develop a global monitoring network that is as
integrated as the planet it observes.
