Conservation Ranger

The Trustees of Reservations seeks a qualified individual for the 
full-time, year-round position of Conservation Ranger.  This full-time, 
year-round position is located on Martha's Vineyard and reports to the 
Islands Regional Director. 

The Trustees manage 8 properties within the Islands Region which total 
some 3000 acres on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.   Along with these 
properties, The Trustees are responsible for the administration and 
oversight of 24 conservation restrictions with a total acreage of 
approximately 3800 acres.  These properties welcome some 180,000 
visitors each year. 

The Conservation Ranger has general responsibilities in the areas of 
natural history interpretation and environmental education, beach 
management and conservation restriction monitoring.  The Conservation 
Ranger works in a multi-faceted environment where they will utilize 
their skills supervising beach rangers on Chappaquiddick Island, 
actively interpreting the natural history of the islands for local 
schoolchildren and island visitors and monitoring conservation 
restrictions on the Elizabeth Islands, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.  
This position reports to the Islands Regional Director but may be 
assigned to report on a temporary basis to the Chappaquiddick Management 
Unit Superintendent from June through September and the Education and 
Interpretation (E and I) Coordinator from October through May.

Housing may be available for this position.


Specific Responsibilities:

1.  During the school year (October 15 through June 15) the Conservation 
Ranger will assist the E and I Coordinator with all aspects of the 
Claire Saltonstall Education Program (CSEP).  The CSEP provides 
environmental educational opportunities for Martha's Vineyard public 
school children to experience learning in a place-based setting.  
Specific responsibilities may include teaching lesson plans in the 
classrooms of K-12 as well as leading classes on the organization's 
properties on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

2.  The Conservation Ranger will conduct interpretive programming for 
members and visitors on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.  This may 
involve the planning, supervising and conducting of various natural 
history tours, interpretive walks and design of passive interpretive 
displays.

3.  The Conservation Ranger will supervise seasonal beach rangers, 
gatehouse rangers and shorebird monitors on Chappaquiddick Island.  This 
may include setting work schedules for rangers, enforcing property 
regulations, assisting in the protection and monitoring of rare nesting 
shorebirds and ensuring the smooth operation of the Chappaquiddick 
Management Unit's various functions.

4.  As part of the organization's land conservation responsibilities, 
the Conservation Ranger will (1) conduct an on-site monitoring visit for 
each of the 29 properties subject to a TTOR Conservation Restriction on 
Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and the Elizabeth Islands, annually, (2) 
will work in close cooperation with the Conservation Restriction Manager 
to ensure that all properties are in compliance with the terms of the 
restriction and (3) assist in responding to CR landowners concerning 
approvals, amendments or potential violations.
 
5.  Attendance at workshops, trainings and relevant conferences will be 
required from time to time to become familiar with new technologies, 
techniques and issues in the field of environmental education, land 
conservation and property management.

- Interacts effectively with the visiting public while enforcing 
regulations, etc.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule
- Knowledge and understanding of the natural and cultural resources on 
the islands.

Qualifications: 

A Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, Education or Natural 
Resource Management or related field is required.  Knowledge of 
environmental education techniques, ecological concepts, and familiarity 
with New England coastal habitats is helpful.  Great energy, people 
skills and creativity a plus.
