Waquoit Bay Reserve is looking for Volunteers for Summer Season
The Waquoit Bay Research Reserve is offering courses for potential
volunteers and interested community members. The Reserve is looking for
volunteers this summer to help out in our Visitor Center, monitor
endangered shorebirds at South Cape Beach and New Seabury area in
Mashpee, and land stewards to help monitor trails in the Falmouth and
Mashpee areas.
Please join us Wednesdays in June at one of our training and information
sessions to learn more about volunteer opportunities at the Reserve. If
you are able to commit just a couple of hours per week, or have any
special talents you'd like to share with people in your community; we'd
like to hear from you.
The Waters Around Us - A Cape Cod Water Story
Wednesday, June 1: 6:30 - 8:30PM
Everyone knows (or should know) that our drinking water comes from our
groundwater and, what we do in our homes and in our landscapes can
affect our drinking water. What about the health of our coastal bays?
Do you know what causes algae blooms? Education Coordinator Joan Muller
and Stewardship Coordinator, Brendan Annett will fill you in on some of
the details with an illustrated PowerPoint presentation and some visual
models. They'll also explain what folks can do to help protect our most
precious resource on the Cape... the waters around us.
Climate Change and its Impacts on Cape Cod
Wednesday, June 8: 6:30 - 8:30PM
Climate change is beginning to affect individuals, communities, and
animal and plant species around the world. Here in the United States,
and especially on Cape Cod, climate change is likely to cause more heat
stress, rising sea levels, more extreme weather events, worsening air
quality, and concerns about water quantity and quality as well as the
degradation of coastal ecosystems. Come and find out what we as
individuals can do, what positive effects renewable energy (solar, wind)
can have on our efforts to slow climate change. Join Pat Harcourt,
Outreach Educator as we sort through some of the hype and answer some
common questions about this fascinating topic.
Quashnet River Walk - Introduction to Trail Steward Program
Saturday, June 11: 9:00AM
Waquoit Bay and its tributaries include more than 1200 acres of
protected lands in Falmouth and Mashpee; we need your help in managing
our trails. If you enjoy walking in the woods; on woods roads and
trails we are looking for volunteers to "adopt-a-trail". Volunteers
walk their trail once a week; report back any sightings, happenings or
unique wildlife. If you'd like to join this program or just come see
one of our properties, join Brendan Annett, stewardship coordinator for
a 3-5 mile walk along the Quashnet River Property. Meet at the Martin
Road entrance, bring along water, a hat and sunscreen.
The Educated Visitor Greeter
Wednesday, June 15: 3:00 - 5:00PM
The headquarters is visited by people from all over the world each
summer. We will go over the "ins and outs" of staffing the visitor
center, how to interpret the exhibits and how to answer the most common
visitor questions. A must for Greeters, but all volunteers are welcome.
Round the Reserve Field Trip
Wednesday, June 22: 3:00 - 5:00PM
Did you know the Reserve encompasses over 3,000 acres! South Cape
Beach, Quashnet River, the North Quashnet Woods, and Abigail Brook are
some of the parcels of land that make up the Waquoit Bay Reserve. If
you'd like to get an insider's view of the area, join Reserve staff for
a field trip to several of our properties. We'll carpool and give a
brief overview of each area.
