BEAT DOWN GASOLINE PRICES WITH HYBRID VEHICLES & BIODIESEL
South Wellfleet and Waquoit, MA-With gasoline prices soaring this week to
over $2.00 a gallon the answer to saving money on fueling your automobile
may be as simple as looking in your own kitchen-or your favorite fast food
restaurant! Biodiesel, a cleaner-burning alternative fuel made from burning
vegetable oils, will be one of the topics addressed on Tuesday, March 22
during a workshop entitled "Cruisin' with Green Power." Hybrid vehicles and
getting better gas mileage out of your present automobile will also be
discussed during the workshop which is part of Green Home& Business: Focus
on Energy, an educational series for homeowners and small businesses that
focuses on energy in the home and small business.
While fueling your car with used vegetable oil may seem impossible, it is a
reality and many people on Cape Cod are successfully powering their
automobiles with this simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic alternative.
The Cape Cod National Seashore fuels their fleet of automobiles with
biodiesel, as well as uses vegetable based oil for their hydraulic needs. In
this workshop information will be provided on the history of biodiesel, how
it works, pros and cons of the fuel, and its accessibility. Ben Pearson,
Cape Cod National Seashore's Chief of Maintenance will also provide his
perspective using this alternative fuel for a large fleet of vehicles.
Reducing gasoline consumption will also be an important focus of this
workshop. Tips and tricks of how to make your current vehicle more
fuel-efficient will be provided and Michael Partee of General Motors will
give a presentation on hybrid vehicles. A hybrid vehicle will be on hand for
participants to tour.
This talk, the third in the Green Home series, will be held on Tuesday,
March 22 from 2-4 p.m. at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in South
Wellfleet and then repeated later that the same day from 7-9 p.m. at the
Waquoit Bay Reserve in Waquoit. The programs are FREE and registration is
not required, but preferred. The Green Home & Business: Focus on Energy
series is sponsored by four partners: Cape & Islands Renewable Energy
Collaborative, Cape and Islands Self-Reliance, Mass Audubon, and Waquoit Bay
National Estuarine Research Reserve. The next presentation of the series
will be held on March 29 and will showcase a case study featuring local
homeowners who have employed alternative energy, building materials, and
other conservation methods within their new homes. The series concludes on
April 5 with Tom Wineman, a renewable energy consultant, discussing wind
turbines that are made to power individual homes and businesses.
For additional information about this FREE series or to register please
