Coastal Geology: A Cape Cod Story workshop offered at Waquoit Bay
Research Reserve

Tuesday, June 8, 7:00-9:00PM - Cape Cod Geologic History will be led by
Chris Weidman, Research Coordinator, Waquoit Bay Research Reserve and
member of the Falmouth Coastal Resources Group. Dr. Weidman will
present an illustrated discussion on the processes that formed and still
form the Cape as well as how scientists study these changes.

Tuesday, June 15, 7:00-9:00PM - Humans and the Coast: Shoreline
Processes and Changes will be led by Jim O'Connell, Coastal Processes
Specialist, Cape Cod Cooperative Extension and Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution Sea Grant. Through slides and discussion, Mr. O'Connell
will discuss shoreline processes, shoreline change and the beneficial
functions of coastal landforms as well as how humans affect the
coastline. He'll bring along floodplain maps and the new shoreline
change maps which show actual changes over time. He'll discuss erosion
control alternatives and address the questions, "What does the law have
to say about what people can and can not do with their waterfront
property? Is there really any way to stop erosion?"

An optional field trip on Saturday, June 19, 8:30AM-1:00PM will offer
participants a first hand look at glacial moraines, outwash plains,
kettles, and spring-sapping valleys. These are some of the features
that we see or travel by everyday yet few people realize their origins.
Chris Weidman and Jim O'Connell will lead the field trip, please meet at
the Waquoit Bay Reserve parking lot at 8:30AM. The cost for the field
trip, which includes lunch and transportation is $10.00 per person.
