Cape Cod Geology Course offered at Waquoit Bay NERR

A short course with two evening sessions and a field trip on Cape Cod's geology begins Tuesday, May 6, 7:00-9:00PM at Waquoit Bay Reserve. The first session titled Cape Cod Geologic History will be led by Chris Weidman, Research Coordinator with the Waquoit Bay Research Reserve. Dr. Weidman will present an illustrated discussion on the processes that formed and still form the Cape as well as how scientists study these changes.

On Tuesday, May 13, 7:00pm-9:00pm the session Humans and the Coast will be led by Jim O'Connell, Coastal Processes Specialist, Cape Cod Cooperative Extension and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Sea Grant. Through slides and discussion, Mr. O'Connell will discuss shoreline processes, shoreline change and the beneficial functions of coastal landforms as well as how humans affect the coastline. He'll bring along floodplain maps and the new shoreline change maps which show actual changes over time. He'll discuss erosion control alternatives and address the questions, "What does the law have to say about what people can and can not do with their waterfront property? Is there really any way to stop erosion?"

Participants are welcome to attend the field trip on Saturday, May 17 (8:30-1:00 pm). What are the geologic features we can see today that give us clues as to the past? Glacial moraines, outwash plains, kettles, and spring-sapping valleys are some of the features that we see or travel on everyday yet few people realize their origins. Tour the Falmouth area with Jim O'Connell and Chris Weidman. Meet at Waquoit Bay NERR to join group. Registration and a fee of $10.00 is required for the field trip portion of the class so we can reserve lunch and space in the van. Space is limited for the field trip.

The course is sponsored by The Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Sea Grant. Workshops will be held at the Waquoit Bay Reserve's Visitor Center, 149 Waquoit Highway (Route 28).To register call 508-457-0495 x 333 and please leave your name and telephone number. For information call 508-457-0495 x107.
