Subject: habitat restoration grants - deadline March 15, 2002

Dear Friends of the Gulf of Maine:

The Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment (the Council) has
released a request for proposals for HABITAT RESTORATION activities in the
US portion of the Gulf of Maine. This is the first of a three-year
partnership between the Council and the NOAA National Marine Fisheries
Service's Community-based Restoration Program.

For complete details about the Council's Habitat Restoration Grants, visit:
[http://gulfofmaine.org/habitat_restoration_grants.html]. Please share this
announcement with your friends, neighbors and colleagues who might be
interested in this opportunity.

Some basics about the grant program:

Who is eligible to apply?
Non-governmental organizations, municipalities, schools, tribal, and state
governments for projects located within the US portion of the Gulf of Maine.

What types of projects are eligible?
Projects that will result in on-the-ground restoration of habitat to benefit
living marine resources, including anadromous fish species. This includes
project design and planning, project implementation, and post-restoration
monitoring activities. The web site gives examples.

How much is available?
A total of $285,000 is available in 2002. Awards will range from $5,000 to
$25,000 for site-specific project design and planning activities and $10,000
to $50,000 for project implementation including monitoring. Awards outside
of these ranges will also be considered. All grants should target at least
a 1:1 non-federal match (in cash, time, goods or services). Work conducted
is to be completed within 18-24 months of contract approval. Payment will
be made on a reimbursement basis with 15% of the grant award allowed
up-front.

Who will answer questions about the grant program?
First, please read the online request for proposals
[http://gulfofmaine.org/habitat_restoration_grants.html], which provides
further detail. It provides application forms and information about where
to mail your application. Applicants are strongly urged to confer with
federal and state agency personnel during the development of proposals.
Initial contacts should be made through the following state agency
personnel:
Maine - Elizabeth Hertz, 207-287-8935, elizabeth.hertz@state.me.us
Massachusetts - Christy Foote-Smith, 617-292-5991,
christy.foote-smith@state.ma.us
New Hampshire - Ted Diers, 603-271-2155, tdiers@osp.state.nh.us

Why did you receive this email?
This email is being sent to individuals who are in one of the Council's
databases. This means that you either receive the Gulf of Maine Times,
attended a Council-funded workshop, or are listed in the Council's ngo
database. The Council is conscious of privacy concerns and will only send
infrequent emails to inform you of grant opportunities, annual award
opportunities, and things of that nature. If you do not wish to receive
such emails in the future, please contact me at lmarron@des.state.nh.us or
603-225-5544.

Sincerely,
Laura
