Green Home 2001: Focus on Energy
In light of recent concerns about energy prices and supply, Waquoit Bay
National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Cape and Islands Renewable
Energy Collaborative will present four workshops on energy conservation and
renewable energy in the "Green Home 2001: Focus on Energy" Series. The
workshops, designed to help citizens improve their quality of life, save
money and help protect natural resources, will be held each Wednesday
during the month of March from 7-9 pm at the Waquoit Bay Reserve
Headquarters on Rt. 28 in East Falmouth.
The series will open on March 7 with the topic of Energy Conservation.
Bruce Torrey of Building Diagnostics will focus on weatherproofing your
home to improve comfort, energy efficiency and indoor air quality. In
addition, Robert Kowalzic of Mass-Save will reveal tips and tricks designed
to help reduce your electric bills, including information on the new
efficient appliances and light bulbs now available on the market. The
title for March 14 is "Electricity from the Sun and Wind". Moneer Azzam,
who will present on photovoltaics, has pursued a career in developing,
testing and marketing solar energy, and also has outfitted his own home
with photovoltaic and solar thermal systems. Mike Jacobs of Second Wind, a
company that makes wind measurement systems for wind power, will discuss
the potential for wind energy systems on Cape Cod - homescale and larger.
The "Heat from the Sun" workshop on March 21 will focus on sunspaces and
solar hot water. Courtney Miller, whose architectural firm focuses on
integrated design and green building, will discuss principles to use when
designing a sunspace to enjoy while reducing energy costs through the use
of passive solar energy. Conrad Geyser of Cotuit Solar will cover solar
thermal panels as a way to heat water in your home. On March 28, Cape
Codders who are in various stages of installing renewable energy systems
will share their experiences. Speakers will be Joe Hackler, Amy Larkin,
Seth Wilkinson, Allison Flynn, Tom Hiksdal, and Malcolm Wells.
There is no charge for the workshops, but pre-registration is required.
Each workshop will be followed by a networking / discussion time for those
interested. Please call 508-457-0495 x 108 for any questions or to
register for any or all of the workshops.
