SCHEDULE:
Wednesday, February 28, 2001 7:00 p.m.
At the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution,
Redfield Auditorium, Water St., Woods Hole
"Logs of the Dead Pirates Society: A Schooner
Adventure Around Buzzards Bay"
Among the myriad of boats cruising our bay, the
research schooner SARAH ABBOTT—crewed by high school
students studying marine biology—sails each summer
with Captain Randall Peffer at the helm. While
pursuing their research with the help of a scientist
on board, the teenagers also learn how to sail, and
discover the history of the area.
Join Captain Peffer as he shares many of the stories
and experiences captured in his new book, "Logs of
the Dead Pirates Society: A Schooner Adventure
Around Buzzards Bay". A tale of exploration and
adventure, this book is the absorbing account of a
routine cruise that becomes a deeply personal
quest. Mr. Peffer is literature teacher at
Phillips Academy in Andover, MA and is a licensed
captain. Copies of his book will be available for
purchase.

"Economics of Open Space: The Saving of the Green"
Southeastern Massachusetts is facing the highest
rate of development in the northeast. In fact,
one-third of the region’s open space and farmland
has been lost to development in the past 30 years.
How will these newly developed properties affect
local tax rates and the future of our communities?
Would preserving as much open space as possible be a
better way for a town to manage town expenses and
property taxes? Does open space have any fiscal
value to a town or is it worth more once it’s
developed?
Lee Hayes, Chairman of the Marion Finance Committee
and Vice President of the Sippican Lands Trust, will
relate how the Town of Marion has approached the
issue of growth management and open space over the
past five years. Melissa Adams, Economic Planner at
the American Farmland Trust (AFT) will discuss the
numerous Cost of Community Services studies AFT has
performed for towns throughout New England.

"Shellfish Aquaculture in Buzzards Bay: Bay Scallops
and Oysters"
Bay Scallops and Oysters have historically been an
important part of the commercial and recreational
shell fisheries in Buzzards Bay. These traditional
fisheries are now being augmented by a blend of
modern science and technology. Sites such as West
End Pond in Cuttyhunk and Taylor’s Point in Bourne
are now teeming with these farm-raised shellfish.
Seth Garfield, Coalition for Buzzards Bay staff
member, has been cultivating oysters as the owner of
Cuttyhunk Shellfish Farms for 20 years. Dale
Leavitt is jointly employed by Cape Cod Cooperative
Extension and Woods Hole Sea Grant. He is also the
Technical Coordinator for the SouthEastern
Massachusetts Aquaculture Center (SEMAC) located at
the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
