New Publication: Marine Connectivity Conservation ‘Rules of Thumb’ for MPAs
To inform dialogue and action for better conserving marine areas and species around the world, the Marine Connectivity Working Group has produced a new publication titled Marine Connectivity Conservation ‘Rules of Thumb’ for MPA and MPA Network Design. This publication is the result of collaboration among experts around the world and provides guidance for integrating connectivity into the planning and management of marine protected areas (MPAs). ** See More... Seagrass-grazing dugongs and green sea turtles supercharge the seeds they eat
For decades, scientists speculated that seagrass seeds served only as a backup to vegetative proliferation; they settled into the sand beneath their parent plants, ready to germinate if anything untoward befell the living meadow. But according to findings published recently in Biotropica, the tiny seeds can disperse over hundreds of miles, and thereafter can germinate rapidly. However, they must first suffer the indignity of being ingested and pooped out by dugongs (Dugong dugong) or green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas). ** Read More... Ocean shark populations are tanking. This is how fast
The global abundance of ocean sharks and rays has declined by 71 percent since 1970, due to increased fishing and a lack of protection. Worldwide, sharks and rays are accidentally caught as bycatch, but in some places, they're targeted for their meat as well as their fins, gill plates, leather, and liver oil. An estimated 63 million to 273 million sharks were landed in the early 2000s, a peak of shark overfishing with lasting implications. ** Read More...
